Golden Comets

Golden Comet chickens are bred for the commercial egg market in the USA from strains of Rhode Island Red roosters, such as New Hampshires or Cherry Eggers, mated with White Rock or Rhode Island White hens (with the silver factor rather than the dominant white gene), depending on hatchery preferences.  Rhode Island Red chickens were developed in the late nineteenth century from Malay chickens and brown Leghorns as a dual-purpose breed. Modern strains are selected for egg production. New Hampshire chickens were bred from Rhode Island Reds around 1935 as early maturing, large brown egg layers. White Rocks were selected as broilers from the Plymouth Rock chicken, a dual-purpose breed created in Massachusetts in the early nineteenth century from Black Java hens and a barred rooster. Rhode Island Whites are dual-purpose birds developed in 1888 from partridge Cochin chickens, white Wyandotte chickens, and white Leghorn chickens.

Blue Plymouth Rocks

The Blue Plymouth Rock chicken is a cross between a native Andalusian male and Plymouth Barred Rock female. The combination of two heritage breeds ensures vigor. Its blue-gray and lavender plumage make it an exceptionally attractive bird.

Weight

The standard weight for a Rock hen is 4.5 lbs. to 5.5 lbs., while a rooster can weigh 6-6.5 lbs.

Good for

Known as a dual-purpose breed, The Blue Plymouth Rock dual-purpose chickens are known for their egg production and the ability to perform well under less than ideal conditions - like cold weather.

Temperament

Owners describe these dual-purpose chickens as sweet, calm, and docile. Blue Plymouth Rock chickens are curious and always checking their surrounding environment. Although they do well when confined, they are happier free-ranging.

Egg Production

Prolific layers, Blue Plymouth Rocks can produce nearly 300 large to extra-large brown eggs per year.

Time to Maturity

Plymouth Rocks chicks will mature around 20 weeks and make great dual-purpose chickens. Hens will typically begin to lay eggs at 18-20 weeks.

Rustic Ramblers

The Rustic Rambler Parent stock is imported from the Czech Republic. This is a cross between a Black Copper Maran Male and a Barred Rock Female. Both Parent lines lay a darker than normal egg but the majority of the dark color comes from the father line.  Most breeds that lay a dark egg are not economical due to low egg numbers and high appetite, the Rustic Rambler gives an excellent balance of beautiful dark eggs with profitability.

  • Excellent Layer - Estimated - 260-280 Eggs Per Year

  • Full Grown Hen = 4.8 - 5lbs live weight

  • Average Egg Weight = 62.5 Grams - L to XL

  • This breed is color sexable at day of age

  • Egg Color is Dark Brown

  • Temperament is quiet

  • This a hearty dark brown egg layer which will add personality to your flock and egg carton while being economically profitable.

Easter Eggers

The Easter Egger chicken is not truly a chicken breed but is instead a cross between different chicken breeds. This cross is usually between Araucana and Ameraucana birds, but truthfully, Easter Eggers are rather mixed and can be produced when other birds are crossed with either the Ameraucana or Araucana.

This mix produces a chicken that does not meet any particular breed standards but instead displays a variety of colors and patterns.

Araucanas are a chicken breed that was originally from South America but was later brought to the United States. Araucana chickens are famous for laying beautiful blue eggs.

However, a disruptive gene can cause many of the eggs of the Araucana to fail to hatch. Therefore, the breed has become rarer and rarer, and many people prefer instead to breed the Easter Egger, which is also capable of producing blue eggs.

The Ameraucana chicken, on the other hand, was bred to be the answer to the unhealthy eggs problem of the Araucana. Ameraucanas were created when Araucanas were bred with other chickens in order to eliminate the problematic gene from the Araucana chickens.

Easter Egger chickens have inherited traits and appearance features from both sides of their mixed ancestors, and because of this, many Easter Eggers look quite different from each other.

Easter Egger chickens are known as very good egg layers and can produce about four eggs a week. The eggs themselves are usually extra large in size. This means that keepers of the Easter Egger chicken can expect to obtain about 200 to 280 extra large eggs each year.

Depending on the genetic makeup of the hen, the Easter Egger chicken can lay a variety of differently colored eggs, including blue, pink, cream, and a range of brown tones. However, each hen will only produce one color of eggs.
